Recording Notes by Aisling Agnew

It is very special for me to make this recording. Ever since I have known Dave, I have known of his immeasurable pain at the loss of his mother Joan and the tremendous love he has for her. To mark 20 years since her death with this beautiful music feels like a very fitting tribute.

This version of Music for the Departed was very kindly made by Dave so that I could play it at my niece's funeral in Belfast and I recorded it here exactly two years from that day.

Nóra is my godchild and she was the most beautiful, funny, special girl. She has always been my inspiration to try my best at things especially because she always had to try so hard. I wanted to play some music for her because Nóra had heard me playing the flute since before she was even born (as a student in London I lived with my sister and brother-in-law) and on countless other occasions over the years. She also heard her mum Meabh play the flute with Dave on another special occasion. I love her and miss her terribly, and playing this piece allows me to gently sit with that pain.

Music for the Departed is a long suite describing. in music. the grieving process. It was originally composed for Irish fiddle, classical violin and guitar in 2006. I have made several arrangements of this since including a version for flute and guitar.

This track is the flute and guitar version of the opening slow air 'Grief'.

The original piece was dedicated to my late Mum Joan Jennings who died in 2001 and Aunt Catherine Flynn who died in 2005. Both died from cancer long before their times.

The piece has since taken on wider significance and seems to resonate generally with people as a piece of music to help with the grieving process. Aisling Agnew's beautiful and moving interpretation on alto flute takes this piece into a new. meditative space for me and it is fitting she has dedicated it to the memory of her lovely niece Nóra who very sadly passed away in 2019.
